Chapter Five

Being a dragon shifter wasn’t for the faint of heart, Robin realized. Being a part of Drayce’s clan surely separated the wheat from the chaff. After a couple weeks of learning to fly and properly breathe fire, she understood how they managed to survive for so many years. They were forces of nature.

Every night Drayce brought her to the beach to practice flying. She learned to take off while running as well as being in a stationary position. During the first sessions, he flew with her, remaining close in case she got anxious or fatigued. As she became stronger and more confident, he stood on shore in human form and watched her travel over the sea. He wanted her to fully trust in her abilities, even though she knew he would be at her side in an instant if she were to get into trouble.

The fire breathing part of the training was interesting, if somewhat humorous. Robin soon learned factors such as diet and energy level contributed to the size and power of flames. When she was tired, her ability to launch fire was cut short. When she ate things like peppers or other spicy food, her flames burned longer.

“I wonder if having to breathe fire for long periods of time can lead to heartburn,” she pondered aloud in Drayce’s presence during a shared meal at dinner. He just gave her a look as he ate his red curry.

Then there were the constant shifts between dragon and human forms. Robin’s muscles were so sore the first week. She suffered aches so deep she didn’t want to get out of bed, but by the third week, her body grew accustomed to changing form. By the end of the first month, the pain went away and she didn’t even think about it.

She began to look forward to her evenings with Drayce on the beach under the stars. He left work at the office behind to soar with her in the sky. As her endurance increased, twice they flew out to a set of nearby islands. Robin still couldn’t believe she got up the courage to fly over an active volcano.

The nighttime was magical, as though only the two of them existed on the island. With each night that passed, she felt a bond growing between her and Drayce, one which built on her initial attraction to him. They shared a unique ability few people in the world possessed. The fact still left her in disbelief, but she felt sheltered when she was in his presence, safe and accepted.

In spite of her feelings for Drayce, she made sure not to act on them. She was still learning the ways of his clan and how to accept him as leader. She didn’t want to upset the process by thinking about what it would be like to go into his arms and be completely hedonistic by making love on the beach.

The beach, with its warm water and sand, always provided her with ample opportunity to use her imagination, whether she wanted to or not.
